The Spirit Of Bayou DeSiard
(Hope Waits/Markus Rill)

Daddy would visit the bars that Jerry Lee played
he’d smoke and he’d drink and he’d dance in his own reckless way
folks called my Dad “the wild spirit of Bayou Desiard”
”just as wild as the Killer”, they said, and those were the Killer’s wild years

Daddy was dreamin’ and singin’ in a rock’n’roll band
till he put a kid in Jolene Thibodeaux’s belly and a ring on her hand
some more young ‘uns later he’d run out of reasons to stay
so one night the spirit of Bayou Desiard, he just snuck away

The gracious woman who loved him
served food for the kids and tucked them safe into bed
no matter the sermon he heard
the wild spirit of Bayou Desiard he could never be fed

So he ran off to Reno and then drank his way back to Monroe
he found my Momma and figured she’d be the one redeeming his soul
she made him quit drinkin’ and he reckoned this time around he’d be good
put on his steel-toe workin’ boots every day just like he should

But old habits are hard to give up when the whiskey tastes fine
and there’s girls take a married man’s mind right off of the kids and the wife
so he didn’t last long and my Momma, she did not compromise
strapped us kids in the car with popsicles and just went for a ride

The gracious women who loved him
fed the kids and gave them a home
maybe Daddy was not worthy of them
or maybe the wild spirit of Bayou Desiard was better off on his own

Tonight as I’m standing alone here on Bayou Desiard
I love my Mom and my brothers and sisters and yet I feel weird
sometimes I can feel Daddy’s blood rushin’ right through my veins
makes me wonder if the spirit of Bayou Desiard can ever be tamed
